International Students

Applicants who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents are considered international students. Please note that you are not automatically considered a permanent resident if you currently reside in the U.S. Please check your immigration documents to ensure that you hold a Permanent Resident Alien Card. If you do not hold a Permanent Resident Alien Card, you must apply to USF Sarasota-Manatee as an international student.

Additionally, an international applicant must submit:

  • Results of transcript evaluation(s) for all coursework completed outside of the U.S. (see information below).
  • Demonstrate proficiency in English. Applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate proficiency by meeting these minimum test score requirements: 550 on the paper-based, 79 on the internet-based TOEFL (IBT), or 6.5 on the IELTS.
Note: The TOEFL/IELTS requirement may be waived if the applicant has successfully met another requirement of proof of English proficiency, as outlined in the USFSM Academic Catalog.

Steps to Apply

Step 1:

Complete your International Application and submit payment for the application fee.

Step 2:

Determine whether your credentials need to be evaluated (see more information below). If appropriate, submit school credentials to an approved credentialing agency for evaluation. Completed evaluations should be sent directly from the evaluating agency to the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee Office of Admissions. For all domestic schools attended, final official transcripts (in a sealed envelope) must be submitted.

Step 3:

Provide test scores.

SAT/ACT — All freshman and lower-level transfer students are required to submit official SAT or ACT test scores directly from the testing agency. If you are submitting ACT scores, you are required to submit scores for the Writing section, per Florida Board of Governors requirements. You can contact an appropriate testing agency and have your scores submitted via mail, addressed to the USFSM Admissions Office, or submit them electronically via the codes listed below:

TOEFL/IELTs — International students who are required to submit TOEFL/IELTS scores for proof of English proficiency must have scores sent directly from the testing agency either via mail or the electronic codes below:

  • TOEFL (college code: 5828)
  • IELTS (official scores must be mailed directly to USFSM Office of Admissions)
Note: TOEFL/IELTS scores are valid for two years from the original date of examination.

GRE/GMAT — Graduate applicants may be required to submit official test scores depending upon their intended program of study. To determine whether you will need to submit scores for the GRE/GMAT, please contact the Graduate Admissions Specialist in the Office of Admissions.

To send your scores to USFSM, please use the following GMAT codes:
  • Professional MBA Program – X9R-MQ-01
  • MS in Hospitality Management – X9R-MQ-41

After you have submitted your online admissions application, you will receive an email from the Office of Admissions with your student identification number (commonly referred to as a U-number). You can use this number to check the status of your application at any time on OASIS. Once you have submitted your completed application, paid the application fee, and submitted all appropriate transcripts/credential evaluations and test scores, your application will be reviewed for an admissions decision. We will notify you once an admissions decision has been made.

Applications that are missing transcripts, evaluations, English Language test scores (TOEFL/IELTS), application fees, or other requested materials, are considered incomplete and are unable to be issued an admissions decision.

Do I need to have my transcripts evaluated?

My transcripts are from a domestic or U.S. regionally accredited institution abroad. No. Transcripts from institutions located in the United States, or located abroad but hold a U.S. regional accreditation, do not need to be evaluated. (If you are unsure if your institution falls into this category, contact the Admissions office prior to submitting transcripts.)
My transcripts are from an institution located outside of the United States. Yes. All foreign high school and postsecondary transcripts must be evaluated by one of the credential evaluation services identified on the USFSM website and published by the appropriate international admissions office.

Note: Evaluations must be dated within three years of application to the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee. Evaluation results submitted that are past this three-year mark will be filed as unable to process, and you will be asked to resubmit an evaluation with an appropriate date.

In addition to Orientation at USF Sarasota-Manatee, all international students are required to attend mandatory Orientation/check-in for immigration purposes.

Credential Evaluation Services

Applicants who completed part or all of their postsecondary (college or university) work at an institution not in the U.S. are required to submit an evaluation of all academic work. [Students applying as a freshman or lower-level transfer applicants who graduated from a high school outside of the U.S. must submit final high school transcripts for evaluation as well.] The evaluation must include a course-by-course evaluation, with grades or marks and credits or hours equated to the U.S. educational system.

Below are approved credential evaluation services. The credential evaluation must be submitted directly to the Office of Admissions by the service provider, and must include a copy of the original document, along with an English translation from the service, if applicable. You should review the services below for information on the documentation you are required to submit and the fees associated with evaluation and translation (if applicable).

International Application Requirements — Post-Acceptance

Once you have been admitted to the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee, you will be contacted by the Global Engagement Office regarding processing of immigration-related documents. Admitted international students will receive an email directing them to USF Glo-Bull iStart, which is the comprehensive data system for case management and immigration compliance for the USF-system.

Documentation of available funds for a full academic year, including tuition, fees, and living expenses, is required before USFSM can issue you an I-20 or DS-2019 document. Admitted students requesting I-20 or DS-2019 documents will be required to enter their USF NetID and password to begin the process in the Glo-Bull iStart sytem. This system is designed to guide international students through all necessary steps in obtaining an I-20/DS-2019. The I-20/DS-2019 issuance for obtaining a student visa needs to be completed at least 30 days prior to the beginning of the semester for new international students. Please note that international students will not have access to this system until they have been officially admitted to the university.
