40th Anniversary in Focus: USFSM enjoys local media partnership

USF Sarasota-Manatee enjoyed a whir of media attention in January 1974 when New College joined the state university system. It garnered more buzz in fall 1975 when “USF Sarasota” became a USF System regional campus. And again in fall 2006 when the campus moved to its new home at the former Crosley Estate.

“A campus of one’s own,” the Sarasota Herald-Tribune said at the time.

This Bradenton Herald headline in fall 2013 captured the optimism felt on campus: “A bright new day dawns for USF Sarasota-Manatee with first freshman class.”

Media support in one form or another has accompanied USFSM’s journey. From momentous announcements to colorful feature stories, news organizations play a part in chronicling USFSM’s history. USFSM, in turn, has benefitted from this attention, especially Brunch on the Bay.

In addition to covering the yearly scholarship fundraising event, news organizations – including the Bradenton Herald, Bright House Networks, Comcast, the Herald-Tribune Media Group, the Jewish Federation, Sarasota magazine, SCENE magazine, Suncoast News Network, SRQ Media, West Coast Woman, WUSF Public Media and WWSB ABC7 – routinely sign on as sponsors to provide Brunch announcements and coverage.

“The media plays a vital role in helping the university to gain recognition in the community and the state,” said Charlie Terenzio, associate director of communications and marketing at USFSM. “Our local media has served as outstanding partners and continue to support USF Sarasota-Manatee in a variety of ways.”
