Research @USFSM: A Veteran’s Transition

Posted: August 11, 2017

Research @USFSM: Dr. Eric Hodges, from our College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences, shares his research and personal experience reintegrating into civilian life after serving in the armed forces.

“My research also suggests a potential bridge between military and civilian life: community service. Volunteering can rekindle veterans’ lost sense of purpose and help forge new bonds of kinship. Therefore, we shouldn’t be surprised by the findings of a recent report published by the National Conference on Citizenship that found veterans volunteer, engage with local governments and community organizations, vote, and help neighbors at rates higher than their non-veteran counterparts” (Herald Tribune, 2017).
