(SARASOTA, Fla. July 26, 2018) – University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee Regional Chancellor Dr. Karen Holbrook has appointed Dr. Greg Smogard to the position of innovation and business development officer.
Dr. Smogard will lead USF Sarasota-Manatee’s business engagement efforts, focusing on creating and enhancing mutually beneficial partnerships with businesses by leveraging the university’s resources and innovation.
“We are thrilled to have Dr. Smogard join our senior leadership team and put his extensive business development skills and experience to work for USF Sarasota-Manatee,” said Dr. Holbrook. “We are deeply committed to supporting opportunities for our students and meeting the needs of the businesses in our region. Greg has the business expertise and entrepreneurial spirit to utilize USFSM’s resources in an innovative way to help businesses meet the challenges they face.”

During his business career, Dr. Smogard has worked with Fortune 500 companies and global brands in more than 40 countries and held several management positions in American Express’ Latin American Division and with Blockbuster/Viacom. He also co-founded, mentored and invested in several startups. He has lived and traveled extensively abroad and is bilingual.
Dr. Smogard also recently worked with the Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) at the University of Miami Business School where he served as the director of the Innovators for the Americas program, an experiential entrepreneurship course that partnered Miami students and professors with their counterparts in four Latin American universities. He also participated in the Global Business Consulting program, which provided MBA students with the opportunity to conduct consulting engagements with international corporations, and he lectured part-time in the Business School. He is also the author of the book, “A World of Opportunities for Aspiring Entrepreneurs: Creating Your Own Job in the New Normal.”
Smogard earned a bachelor’s degree in history and political science at Minnesota State University-Moorhead, a master’s degree in psychology at St. Cloud State University, and a PhD in international studies at the University of Miami. He was recognized as a Minnesota State University-Moorhead Distinguished Alumni in 2013.
