Are you thinking about a degree in biology? Whether you’re considering medical school or a career in research, biology is a great major to launch a variety of careers. With all this in mind, how can you decide which biology program is right for you?
If you’re not sure where to start, below are five questions that every student should ask at a Biology Open House.
- What are class sizes like for introductory biology courses?
Depending on the size of the university, you could be taking Introduction to Biology with anywhere from 20 to over 250 freshmen. The smaller the class size, the more personal your experience will be with your classmates and the professor. Be sure to ask your admissions counselor about the number of seats in each section to find the best fit for your learning style.
- What internship and out-of-classroom experiences are offered to biology students?
Hands-on experience outside of a classroom environment can be extremely valuable as a biology major. Talk with an admissions counselor about options available for you to expand your knowledge outside of the university walls. Ask about internship programs, study abroad opportunities or other ways biology students are involved in their field.
- What opportunities exist for undergraduates to work on research or academic projects with professors?
Undergraduate research is a great way to gain real-world experience in the field and prepare you for your next step, whether it be graduate school or your first job. Make it a priority to discuss how current students are working with professors to discover what opportunities may be available to you later on.
- Can you tell me about career placements or grad school acceptances for graduates?
At the end of the day, your undergraduate experience is preparing you for either entering the workforce or moving on to a graduate-level program. Is there a career resource center available to students? What kind of job placement do biology students see? Where are students going to grad school? Be sure to ask how the university prepares its students for life after graduation.
- How do biology students have fun on campus?
Biology can be one of the most rigorous programs offered, but all students should take some time to relax and enjoy their time in college! Ask current students about clubs and organizations to get involved in, their favorite hangout spots and how you can best enjoy your time on campus.
