Proctorio enables faculty to deploy automated, online proctoring for quizzes, tests, and exams administered through Canvas. It offers a broad range of features designed to support academic integrity.

How Proctorio Works

Proctorio is integrated into Canvas and can be enabled in the settings of any Canvas Quiz. Once enabled, Proctorio records and analyzes video of each student’s activity while taking the Quiz. The system then generates an interactive report inside of Canvas, flagging moments of potential interest for faculty review. The parameters for analysis can be adjusted by faculty to fit the level of scrutiny needed for their specific online test.

How to Get Started with Proctorio

We highly recommend all faculty complete the online Proctorio training workshop before beginning to use it in their classes (visit our Professional Development page or contact us to enroll). This self-paced, staff facilitated training provides faculty with all the information they need to successfully deploy Proctorio in their courses.

Instructors add Proctorio to a Canvas course in the same manner as other external tools like Panopto and Blackboard Collaborate. Step-by-step directions are provided in our Proctorio Faculty Guide. In order to create or work on a Canvas Quiz with Proctorio, faculty must use the Chrome web browser and related Proctorio browser extension.

Faculty members who choose to use Proctorio are required by USF System policy to add the following Proctorio Syllabus Statement into their course syllabus:

All students must review the syllabus and the requirements including the online terms and video testing requirements to determine if they wish to remain in the course. Enrollment in the course is an agreement to abide by and accept all terms. Any student may elect to drop or withdraw from this course before the end of the drop/add period.

Online exams and quizzes within this course may require online proctoring. Therefore, students will be required to have a webcam (USB or internal) with a microphone when taking an exam or quiz. Students understand that this remote recording device is purchased and controlled by the student and that recordings from any private residence must be done with the permission of any person residing in the residence. To avoid any concerns in this regard, students should select private spaces for the testing. The University library and other academic sites at the University offer secure private settings for recordings and students with concerns may discuss location of an appropriate space for the recordings with their instructor or advisor. Students must ensure that any recordings do not invade any third party privacy rights and accept all responsibility and liability for violations of any third party privacy concerns. Setup information will be provided prior to taking the proctored exam. For additional information about online proctoring you can visit the online proctoring student FAQ.

What Your Students Will Need

In order to complete a Canvas Quiz that has Proctorio enabled, students will need:

  • Access to the Chrome web browser via a desktop computer (that meets Chrome minimum system requirements)
  • A functional webcam and microphone
  • A USF Student ID or a government issued ID
  • A quiet space in which to complete the test

Faculty are encouraged to incorporate a practice Proctorio-enabled Quiz into their course in order to provide students with an opportunity to test and address any issues with their computer configuration.

Additional information for students can be found on our Proctorio For Students page.
