Proctorio enables faculty to deploy automated, online proctoring for quizzes, tests, and exams administered through Canvas. It incorporates a broad range of features designed to support academic integrity.
How Proctorio Works
Proctorio is integrated into Canvas and can be enabled for any Canvas Quiz. Once enabled, video of student activity is recorded and machine-analyzed by Proctorio. The system then generates an interactive report for the instructor, flagging moments of potential interest for faculty review.
What You Will Need
Before taking your first Proctorio-enabled Canvas Quiz, we recommend that you watch the Proctorio Student Guide video tutorial, which provides a concise overview of how to get started.
In order to access and complete a Canvas Quiz that has Proctorio enabled, students will need:
- Access to the Chrome web browser via a desktop computer (that meets Chrome minimum system requirements)
- A functional webcam and microphone
- A USF Student ID or a government issued ID
- A quiet space in which to complete the test
Students will also need to install the Proctorio browser extension.
What information does Proctorio collect from students? What about privacy?
The information that Proctorio collects depends on how your instructor sets up your online proctored quiz. A Proctorio-enabled test may verify your identity, record webcam video, record audio, record your computer screen, and/or monitor your computer activity while you take your test.
Only your instructor and authorized staff have access to the information collected by Proctorio, and it is compliant with Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) regulations. FERPA is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records.
How do I know if my online exam will require proctoring?
Your instructor will include a statement in your syllabus if you will be expected to take an exam proctored via Proctorio during your course. Canvas Quizzes that have Proctorio enabled have the words “Remotely Proctored” in their titles.
What if I have a technical problem?
Proctorio offers 24/7 technical support via live chat, accessed through the Proctorio web extension in Chrome. Alternatively you can contact them by phone at 1-866-948-2039 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
You may also contact the USF help desk at 813-974-1222 or email@example.com.
What about accessibility and those students with special needs?
Proctorio is VPAT certified, 508 compliant, and fully accessible to those with special needs. However, any student with special needs should contact the contact the USFSM Students with Disabilities Service Office to coordinate any necessary academic accommodations.
Are there other options available for taking my online Proctored exam?
Students who are unable to install or wish to avoid using Proctorio while taking their online proctored exams using a personal computer may contact Technology Services for information on when and where they can use a USFSM campus computer instead.
